Abstract

This research paper presents a comparative study of the teaching methodologies embedded within two major pillars of the ancient Indian knowledge tradition – the Vedas and the Upanishads. In the Indian knowledge tradition, the Vedas and Upanishads hold an exceptionally important place, providing not only religious and spiritual knowledge but also impacting education from social, moral, and philosophical perspectives. The teaching methods in the Vedas and Upanishads, in their unique and foundational ways, bring knowledge to life.

In Vedic education, particular emphasis was placed on the guru-shishya (teacher-student) tradition, where education was imparted orally. The Vedas are referred to as ‘Shruti,’ meaning “that which is heard,” and were memorized and passed down through generations. This tradition placed utmost importance on memory and discipline, where students memorized mantras and verses and understood their correct pronunciation and meaning under the guidance of the guru. The Vedas taught religious rituals, practices, and social responsibilities, which helped individuals become responsible members of society.

This research paper also examines the similarities and differences in the teaching methods found in both texts. While the Vedic teaching focused on rituals and social responsibilities, the Upanishadic education centered around spiritual awareness and the path to liberation. Both valued the guru-shishya tradition; however, in the Vedas, it was more disciplined and focused on external knowledge, while in the Upanishads, it emphasized individualism through spiritual knowledge and deep dialogue.

Thus, this study concludes that although the teaching methods of the Vedas and Upanishads differ in their approach, their ultimate aim is to present a life philosophy that aids in achieving completeness and truth in human life.
