Main Article Content
Abstract
Yoga is an ancient Indian spiritual and scientific method, which aims to establish a balance of body, mind and soul. The word ‘yoga’ is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘yuj’, which means ‘to join’ or ‘to unite’. Through yoga, a person moves towards the union of soul and the Supreme Being. Maharishi Patanjali called yoga ‘Chittavritti Nirodha’, which means stopping the restlessness of the mind and entering a state of meditation. In the Shrimad Bhagwat Gita, Lord Krishna said, “Yoga: Karmasu Kaushalam”, that is, skill in action is yoga. There are different types of yoga, the main ones being Raja Yoga, Hatha Yoga, Karma Yoga, Bhakti Yoga and Gyan Yoga. Ashtanga Yoga propounded by Patanjali includes Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana and Samadhi. The practice of yoga is not only beneficial for physical health, but it also paves the way for mental peace and spiritual advancement. Today yoga has become popular all over the world and is considered an integral part of a healthy lifestyle. June 21 is celebrated as ‘International Yoga Day’, which reflects its global acceptance.
