Abstract

This riveting interview sheds light on the forgotten history of Mahua Dabar and the heroic resistance against British rule, as narrated by Shah Alam Rana, a descendant of the revolutionary Pirai Khan. The story unfolds in the historic region of Basti, where the warrior lineage of Rajputs, Chauhans, and later freedom fighters like Pirai Khan left an indelible mark.

Pirai Khan, an ardent follower of Maulvi Ahmadullah Shah, played a key role in the 1857 uprising. Under his leadership, revolutionaries waged guerrilla warfare against the British, disrupting their stronghold in the region. One of the most significant battles took place on June 10, 1857, when freedom fighters ambushed British officers near the Manorama River, inflicting heavy casualties. Enraged, the British retaliated on June 20, 1857, with a brutal massacre, wiping Mahua Dabar off the map and declaring it a "non-inhabitable" settlement. However, the spirit of rebellion persisted, culminating in the daring attack on the infamous British officer Pepe Williams in 1858, forcing him to flee India.

The interview also delves into Shah Alam Rana’s personal journey—his ancestral roots, early education, and deep passion for history and journalism. From his formative years in Ayodhya, where he developed a keen interest in India's revolutionary past, to his extensive research on the 1857 rebellion, the Hindustan Republican Association, and the Chauri Chaura uprising, his work has been instrumental in preserving these forgotten narratives.

Furthermore, his contributions extend beyond academia. His efforts have led to the beautification of revolutionary sites, documentaries on unsung heroes, and initiatives like Awam Ka Cinema, which brought historical awareness to grassroots levels. His involvement in projects such as the first feature film on manual scavenging, Excreta, and his role in honoring legendary freedom fighters, showcase his unwavering commitment to historical justice.

Shah Alam Rana’s relentless pursuit of truth serves as a beacon of inspiration, reviving lost chapters of India's struggle for independence and ensuring that the sacrifices of Mahua Dabar’s martyrs are never forgotten.
