Abstract

Sarala Devi Chaudhurani stands as an exemplar of an Indian woman whose indomitable willpower, patriotism, and assertion of feminine identity left an indelible mark on history. The niece of Rabindranath Tagore and daughter of Swarnakumari Devi, Sarala Devi broke the conventions of her time, contributing significantly to education, the Swadeshi movement, and women’s empowerment. Inspired by self-reliance and a spirit of rebellion in her early life, she adopted Gandhiji’s ideals; however, her blind devotion eventually led to the disintegration of her personal and family life. Her unwavering dedication to Gandhi made her known as his “spiritual wife,” but this also overshadowed her independent identity. Both Vivekananda and Gandhi were deeply influenced by her personality, yet history did not accord her the recognition she truly deserved. The life of Sarala Devi Chaudhurani remains an inspiring saga of womanly consciousness, Swadeshi spirit, and self-respect—illustrating that the true essence of womanhood lies in balancing devotion with individuality.
