Abstract

The most valuable item sent from India to foreign countries was pearls. In ancient India, the word mukta is used for pearls. Pearl industry was an important industry in ancient India. Pearls were found in abundance in the seas and rivers of India. Pliny has called India a storehouse of pearls. Pearl industry was an important industry in ancient India. Garuda Purana mentions Sinhala, Parlok, Saurashtra, Tamravarna, Parshava, Kubera, Pandya, Hatak and Hemak as treasures of pearls. In the post-Mauryan period, pearl industry had gained international fame. Atharvaveda, Vaijayanti Kosh, Agnipuran and Garuda Purana, Amarkosh, Vrihatshinta, Raghuvansh, Shilpadikaram, Arthashastra, Tanjore inscriptions.
