Impact of Social Media on Youth
Main Article Content
Abstract
Social media has become an essential part of young people's lives in the modern digital age, exerting a profound influence on their social, academic, and personal development. This study is based on 100 postgraduate students of Das College, Badaun district, and seeks to understand how social media affects their studies, behaviour, mental health, and lifestyle. The findings show that nearly 90% of students use social media for educational purposes, and platforms such as WhatsApp, YouTube, Instagram, and ChatGPT have become important tools for them. However, many students also experience stress when they do not have access to a phone, face comparison-induced pressure, and tend to perceive virtual social media life as better than reality. About 60% of the students feel pressured after viewing others’ online lifestyles, and 80% experience anxiety when they do not have their phones. The study further reveals that while social media provides opportunities for information, networking, learning, and creative expression, it also negatively affects mental health, time management, and self-esteem. Therefore, digital literacy, awareness, and family/institutional support are essential for safe and balanced digital use.
